It may seem hard to find the time to volunteer . Especially when you aren't being paid.
The truth is, there's more to this kind of work than money. Many volunteer roles teach you important job skills that you may otherwise have never learned (even in a part-time job!). It doesn't matter how old you are, or where you are in life, it’s never too late to look into volunteer gigs. If you still aren't convinced, here's a few benefits to volunteering:
- Experience- If you've never had a job before, this is an easy way to beef up your skills and get some good references (you know, for your resume?). Many places that have volunteer positions provide on-site training and flexible schedules that allow you to learn at your own pace. You'll have a chance to meet all kinds of new people and learn from their experience too!
- It Looks Good- Whether you're applying for jobs or applying to college, showing that you care about your local community looks good! Regular volunteer work shows that you know how to manage your time and that you're a helpful person.
- You Try New Things- When you volunteer, you get to meet new people and see new things. This takes you out of your comfort zone a bit and lets you grow as person. Plus, you aren't stuck at home or at school watching YouTube videos all day (that's not a bad thing really, but you could do more with your time).
- You'll Feel GREAT- Imagine getting that warm, fuzzy feeling of helping out for no reason other than you want to. With a volunteer gig, you could have that feeling ALL THE TIME! It feels amazing helping others and bringing joy to their lives. You are basically donating your time and your talents to something you care about. That's amazing.
Volunteer gigs pop up all the time and cover a wide range of roles. Anything from answering phone calls, to walking dogs, to cooking meals for the elderly. There are so many people (and animals!) who could use your help, why wouldn't you want to make a difference? As a bonus, you get all of the wonderful things we listed above as part of the deal.
